I asked my mom to accompany me to a hair salon for a hair cellophane. Upon arriving there, we were asked, "Ma'am, magpapaayos po kayo? Sa taas po tayo." My mom and I were like "Huh?" Then they asked again, "JS Prom po ba?" Ahhh...then I negated that notion by shaking my head and saying, "No. Hair cellophane."

So, a woman led me to wash my hair, and after that was whisked into the hands of a gentle guy/gay who reminded me of James McAvoy's character in the "Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" because of his curly curly hair. :) Then in an attempt to start a conversation, he asked, "Sang school ka?" I looked at him questioningly. "Mag JS ka ba?" I answered, "No.  Wala lang. Gusto ko lang magpa-cellophane." Then he said while applying the cream onto my hair, "Ang ganda naman ng buhok mo, ang itim itim. Healthy." I blushed and and could see my eyes twinkling, then quipped, "And dami ngang dandruff eh!" The faun-like guy said, "Hindi naman ah..."

Me: "Akala mo lang wala, pero meron. Meron!"

Same day, night.

My mom and dad went on a date in Tagaytay. So being the eldest, I was left in charge of my siblings--my brother, my two younger sisters, and my cousin.

Sunday.

6am--I woke up and prepared breakfast: bacon, ham, friend rice, fried eggplant, fried dried fish, two hot and spicy Pancit Canton with eggs, and pastillas for dessert.

8am--I assigned task for each person: youngest sister Niquie to tidy the garage and terrace, my cousin Carla to clean the living room and dining room, me at the kitchen, and younger sister Yamee to clean the dirty kitchen...my brother, er...was left alone to do his thesis. Yes, I was that considerate. Haha!

9am--Yamee went to her Dance Troupe practice/rehearsal. Niquie, Carla and I were left to do the cleaning upstairs...my brother, was still doing his thesis. Hehe. :P

10am--Time to cook lunch: Menudo and deep-fried potatoes with cheesy dip for dessert.

11am--Read Inquirer.

11:30--lunch time. Sending Niquie to bring Yamee's lunch to school...500 meters or so from our house.

2pm--the arrival of the "newly weds". Heehee! Mom and dad recounting their adventure over merienda they've bought for us to enjoy (or to make bawi to us) Hahaha!

Nag-iinstruct ako sa art department team namin regarding the look of the set. I was looking intently on what my team was doing when I suddenly felt someone touched my left arm. Instinctively, I turned my head and looked to my left, but when I did turn...

I got the biggest surprise of my day. As in, surprise SURPRISE!

When I did turn...one moment I was standing and instructing, the next Sid's lips and mine collided.

We were like...freakish! Both of us, like...woah!
Embarrassing.
Very awkward.
Strange.

I could feel my face blushing...all the blood going up to my face. I couldn't speak for like 15 seconds while Sid was repeatedly saying "sorry".

The first thing I said when I found my tongue was: "Ginulat mo ko! Next time, when you greet me good morning, magsalita ka muna bago ka humawak at bumeso." He said: "Yeah! Sorry. I will do that. Sorry talaga. From now on, I will speak first like 'Hi!' before I do that."

Hindi muna kami maka-recover bilang andaming nakakita.

Sabi ko..."let's just pretend it didn't happen." Ang awkward kasi talaga.

Pero keri lang. Nagulat lang ako ng SOBRA.

Nakondisyon ko na ang sarili ko kahapon (Sunday) na hindi makakanood ng laban ng Chelsea at Arsenal ngayon (Monday) dahil magpre-prod ako for Independencia. So tanggap ko na...(hindi yung part na matatalo ng Chelsea ang Arsenal) hindi na ako makakanood so tignan ko na lang result sa website ng Barclays Premier League.

Few minute past 12mn, nagliliquidate ako ng Independencia stuff ulit ng sa kalagitnaan ng pagliliquidate ay ibaba ko ang ballpen ko at ligpitin ang ginagawa ko. Lumabas ako ng kuwarto at sa kalagitnaan ng kadiliman ng receiving room ng boarding house ay binuksan ko ang T.V. at nilagay sa channel 31 (ESPN) at lumukso ang puso ko ng makita ang teams na naglalaban!!!

10th Cinemanila International Film Festival: Lino Brocka Grand Prize

Several days ago, my father got into a vehicular collision with an Isuzu Elf delivery truck.

Totally wrecked ang likuran ng kotse at nabasag ang salamin sa likod. (My father took some pics but I can't find it sa files niya...he probably sent it to Toyota)

Thank God kasi walang kahit isang galos ang papa ko considering na malakas ang impact ng pag-crash sa kanya. God is so good!

And...buti maayos ang usapan between him and the other party (a big company--particularly sa mga airplanes and stuff)

At buti, insured yung sasakyan namin. (At may extra sasakyan kami kaya lang malakas kumain ng gasolina...PERO CHOOSY PA BA? Syempre hindi na.)

A meeting of mine was cancelled/resched, so I went to KZ's place in Katipunan. Then KZ, Dohna and I went off to Cinemanila Opening Night.

Cocktail time. Then wham! Standing and eating in a corner was Ely Buendia with Marcus. (Actually it was more like, hiding behind a tarpaulin ad and standing close to a huge indoor plant, probably Palmera.)

I was awestruck.

Inside the cinema, his group sat just one row behind us.

Despite that, I still managed to relish the opening film and the short film from Brazil. ;)

Congrats Leo and Tonet! Cinemanila now!

In the 2008 university rankings recently released by the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), only the University of the Philippines and the Ateneo de Manila University (among Philippine universities) made it to the top 400. UP rose from 398 in 2007 to 276 this year; Ateneo rose from 401-500 to 254. De La Salle was ranked 415th and UST was ranked 470th.

According to UP Vice President for Public Affairs Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, UP President Emerlinda R. Roman did not receive any invitation to participate in the survey this year or any questionnaire to answer. What President Roman received was an email message from QS Asia Quacquarelli Symonds’ Regional Director (Asia Pacific), Mandy Mok, informing her that UP had “gone up in the rankings.”

Since UP had not been invited to participate in the survey and had not provided any data, UP officials do not know where and how the figures were obtained on which the ranking was based.

Hidalgo revealed that the message also contained this statement: “In view of the good news, would you like to consider signing up the following at a very attractive package price?” The “package price,” which includes a banner on topuniversities.com, a full page full color ad in Top Universities Guide 2009, and a booth at Top Universities Fair 2009, amounts to $48,930.

“UP can hardly be expected to spend more than 2 million pesos on publicity for itself involving a survey conducted by an organization that refuses to divulge where it obtains its data,” Hidalgo said.

In 2007, UP was invited to participate in the survey, but when THES-QS refused to explain where it obtained the data used to determine UP’s rank in the 2006 survey (where UP was ranked No. 299), university officials decided not to accept the invitation to participate in the 2007 survey. Moreover, the university was given barely a week to respond to the questionnaire.

UP wrote THES-QS in July 2007, informing them of this decision, and again in September 2007, requesting the organization to respect UP’s decision. In response, research assistant Saad Shabir wrote back saying that if it did not receive the information it would be “forced to use last year’s data or some form of average.”

These rankings are supposedly meant to serve as “the definitive guide to universities around the world which truly excel.” In evaluating institutions it computes half of the index based on its reputation as perceived by academics (peer review 40%) and global employers (recruiter review 10%). Since it does not specify who are surveyed or what questions are asked, the methodology is problematic.

An earlier statement, released by UP in August this year, and carried by several national dailies, said: “Even peers require standardized input data to review. But according to the International Ranking Systems for Universities and Institutions: A Critical Appraisal, published by BioMed Central, the Times simply asks 190,000 ‘experts’ to list what they regard as the top 30 universities in their field of expertise without providing input data on any performance indicators (http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741-7015/5/30). Moreover, the survey response rate among selected experts was found to be below 1%. In other words, on the basis of possible selection biases alone, the validity of the measurement is shaky.”

According to the statement, the other half of the index is based on such indicators as student-to faculty ratio, the number of foreign faculty and students in the university, and the number of academic works by university researchers that have been cited internationally. “Data for these indicators, however, typically depend on the information that participating institutions submit. An institution’s index may be easily distorted if it fails to submit data for the pertinent indicators, or if it chooses not to participate.”

As Dr. Leticia Peñano-Ho said in an article carried by the UP Forum last year: “The crux of the matter is to identify the indices that can approximate the different landscapes of universities. There might be a need to relate these indicators to the unversities’ mission statements. UP’s constituents can identify their own indicators and decide on their desirability, relevance and reliability. These criteria should, as an added value, provide international comparisons."
